Mood swings and irritability: are your hormones to blame

Date:

The human growth hormone is one of the most important hormones your body produces, so you notice when it begins to decrease. It involves several functions, and you cannot feel like yourself when it is too low. During this time, the one thing that you sincerely desire is to have your feeling of well-being back at its normal level. You can have this with Hormone Replacement Therapy or HRT.

How Do Different Hormones Affect Your Mood?

Cortisol

The body produces cortisol, the stress hormone, but it releases it in steady amounts so you do not have too much or too little. If you experience stress for a long period, your cortisol levels increase and remain high. When this occurs, it causes you to feel irritable and depressed. It also causes you to experience quick mood swings that are known as “emotional lability.”

If your cortisol levels are low, this also results in depression and may cause you to feel irritable as well.

Estrogen and Progesterone

Women produce estrogen in much larger quantities than men, and it regulates their moods. Estrogen increases the number of serotonin receptors and the amount of this chemical that runs through the brain. When serotonin is low, you may experience anxiety and depression. Estrogen also produces endorphins, known as “feel-good” chemicals.

Progesterone is a hormone released in large amounts during the first trimester of pregnancy. At that time, a woman may experience sadness and feel tired and sluggish. The body also releases progesterone during the menstrual cycle.

Testosterone

Testosterone is the male sex hormone, and it regulates the moods of men. When testosterone levels are low, a man may feel depressed, irritable, and tired. Low testosterone has also been linked to a decrease in a man’s sex drive, so this may also be the reason that a man feels depressed when his testosterone levels are low.

Thyroid Hormones

Thyroid disease does affect your moods. The symptoms of thyroid disease are depression and anxiety. If your thyroid is overactive, a condition known as “hyperthyroidism,” it causes irritability, nervousness, and anxiety. If your thyroid is underactive, a condition known as “hypothyroidism,” you may experience extreme tiredness and depression.

HGH

If you are experiencing depression, anxiety, tiredness, or other emotional symptoms, HGH may be able to stabilize your mood and your energy levels. When people discuss their HGH results, they state that they experienced significant improvements in their emotional well-being. You will see when you read some before and after HGH reviews. That is also when you will discover the many other positive benefits of HGH therapy.

What Are the External Factors That Can Cause Mood Swings?

Lack of Sleep

The lack of sleep affects your mood. For example, if you wake up from a sleepless night, you experience irritability, are vulnerable to stress, and may even be short-tempered. University of Pennsylvania researchers deprived their subjects of sleep to study how sleep affects mood. In the study, a portion of their subjects were only allowed 4.5 hours of sleep each night for one week. These subjects reported feeling mentally exhausted, sad, angry, and stressed. They said their moods improved after being allowed to return to their normal sleep schedules.

Stressful Events

Mood swings and stress are related. For example, when people experience depression, they may begin to notice that they are having mood swings as well. According to one study, after subjects’ sleep has been disturbed, their stress levels go up, and their tendency to experience mood swings also increases.

Poor Nutrition

Scientists performed a majority of studies that found that a diet high in refined sugar impairs brain functioning. If a subject had been diagnosed with mood disorders like depression, they found that the condition got worse on this diet.

Serotonin regulates your moods, and the gastrointestinal tract produces 95% of this neurotransmitter. You have 100 million nerve cells in your GI tract, and the good bacteria are responsible for how these neurons function. Therefore, the good bacteria in your intestinal microbiome are important to your overall health.

Studies demonstrated that those who eat traditional Japanese and Mediterranean diets experience depression at 25% to 35% lower levels than those who eat a traditional Western diet. Scientists say this is the case because those eating traditional Japanese and Mediterranean diets eat more seafood, fish, unprocessed grains, fruits, and vegetables. They are also only eating marginal amounts of dairy products and lean meats, not as many refined and processed sugars and food.

Lack of Socialization

It seems that your physical health and your mental health are connected. When people are lonely, their suicide rates go up, and their instances of depression and anxiety also increase. Several groups are particularly vulnerable to a lack of socialization, and they include senior citizens, marginalized groups such as LGBTQIA+ people, and immigrants.

Many hormones affect your mood, including cortisol, estrogen and progesterone, testosterone, thyroid hormones, and human growth hormone or HGH. One or more of these hormones may cause diminished testosterone levels, but it may also be because of external factors. These include the lack of sleep, stressful events, poor nutrition, and the lack of socialization. Whatever the cause, we will find it at Medzone Clinic and bring you back to health again.
