Our medical practitioners are always telling us that we need to get a good night’s sleep but that’s a lot easier said than done with the busy lifestyles that we lead. We live in a very digital world and so we find ourselves browsing through our various devices late into the evening and well into bedtime. It takes real change in your lifestyle and in your diet to guarantee yourself a good night’s sleep and investing in the right kind of bed linen is incredibly important as well.
This is why you always need to invest in quality bed sheets so that the moment you slip between them, your head hits the pillow and you nod off in a very short space of time. Ideally, you want to be falling asleep quickly at night and you also want to be experiencing deep sleep for at least an hour. The recommendation is that we should all get between 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep every single night and so the following are just some top pieces of advice to help you to achieve that.
-
- More time in natural light – Many of us leave our homes early in the morning, spend our day in an office block until later in the evening and then leave when the sun has already disappeared. This is not good for our general health or our energy levels either. There is something referred to as our circadian rhythm and this needs to be followed if we are to get a good night’s sleep.
- Avoid blue light exposure – If you are not familiar with blue light then you should know that it comes from many different devices that we have including our televisions, our laptops and especially our smartphones. You need to learn to stay away from these things at least a couple of hours before your bedtime.
- No more caffeine in the evenings – Everybody loves to have a hot cup of coffee or tea later in the evening but this is really affecting how you sleep at night. Try to not have any caffeinated beverages at least eight hours before you intend go to sleep and if you can’t stay away from the excellent taste of coffee then buy yourself some decaffeinated coffee from Greenwell Farms.
- Avoid naps in the daytime – You may feel exhausted and you want to close your eyes for 30 minutes to an hour but these power naps as they are referred to, really do affect your night time sleep in a very negative way. It confuses your body and so unless you are working out hard first thing in the morning then an afternoon nap is not for you.
It is also very important to try to go to bed at the same time every night and to rise in the morning at the same time as well. Stay away from alcohol before bedtime also and invest in a very comfortable mattress and pillow.
